Broadly safe for most visitors, with only routine travel precautions needed. Public health and infrastructure are well developed.

Regional breakdown

Most visitors base themselves on the north and west coasts. Grand Baie in the north is the busiest tourist hub, with bars. Boat trips and crowded beaches where pickpocketing and bag snatches are the usual risk. Flic en Flac on the west coast sees similar patterns, especially after dark along the main road and on quieter stretches of sand. Both areas are well policed during the day but thin out sharply at night. The capital Port Louis is the main urban centre. Travellers pass through for the Caudan Waterfront, the central market and the museums. Watch out for bag theft in crowded market lanes and around the bus stations. Walking alone late at night is not advised by either official advisory guidance or official advisory guidance. Inland, Black River Gorges National Park and the Chamarel area draw hikers and day trippers. Risks here are more practical than criminal: steep trails, sudden rain and limited mobile signal. On the east coast, Belle Mare and Trou d'Eau Douce are quieter resort strips with fewer reported incidents. Though the same petty theft advice applies on public beaches. Rodrigues, the smaller sister island 560 km east, is calmer again and mostly visited on short hops from the main island.

Recent advisory changes

The official advisory guidance reissued its Mauritius advisory on 8 December 2025 at Level 2 — Exercise Increased Caution. The reason given is crime. The notice points to pickpocketing, purse snatching and petty theft against foreigners, and also flags more serious incidents including break-ins. Violent assault and harassment of women travelling alone. The level has held steady through recent reviews rather than stepping up or down. The official advisory guidance last updated its Mauritius page on 10 December 2025. It does not warn against travel to any part of the country. The most recent change added guidance for dual nationals returning to the UK, which suggests consular processing rather than a new security concern. official advisory guidance still asks travellers to read the full safety and security section before booking, and to hold insurance that covers their planned activities. Both governments are broadly aligned right now: routine travel is going ahead. But travellers are told to plan for opportunistic crime rather than political or security threats.

What travellers should know

Petty crime is the headline risk. Keep passports and spare cards in the hotel low-risk, carry a day wallet only. And avoid flashing phones or jewellery on the beach or in markets. Car break-ins happen at trailheads and beach car parks, so leave nothing visible. Women travelling alone should plan taxis in advance for evening trips rather than walking back to accommodation, especially around Grand Baie and Flic en Flac. If something is stolen, report it to the local police and keep the report for your insurer. Beyond crime, the bigger day-to-day risks are natural. Cyclone season runs from November to April. And storms can shut airports and ferries with short notice — check forecasts and keep flexible plans in that window. Ocean currents on south and east coast beaches can be strong; swim where lifeguards are posted and respect local flags. Driving is on the left but road quality varies, and night driving on rural roads is difficult. Healthcare in Port Louis is reasonable for routine problems, but serious cases may need evacuation, so travel insurance with medical cover is essential. Register with their home government's traveller alert programme if you are a US citizen, and sign up for official advisory guidance email alerts before you go.
